Avoiding Scams: Protecting Yourself and Supporting SHOFCO Safely

At SHOFCO, we are committed to transparency, integrity, and accountability in all our operations. Unfortunately, as our impact grows, so does the risk of fraudsters misusing our name to deceive well-meaning supporters and community members. This page provides guidance on how to ensure your interactions with SHOFCO are legitimate.

How to Identify Official SHOFCO Communications

  • SHOFCO will never ask for personal financial information (such as PINs or passwords) via phone, email, or social media.
  • Our official website is www.shofco.org – all our official communications channels are outlined on our contact page. Official SHOFCO communications do not come through WhatsApp, though community members often amplify official SHOFCO communications through their personal WhatsApp accounts.
  • Official SHOFCO emails come from addresses ending in @shofco.org or @shininghopeforcommunities.org.
  • Our verified social media accounts are linked from our website. Avoid imposter or unofficial accounts!

Common Scams to Watch Out For

  • Impersonation Scams: Fraudsters may pose as SHOFCO representatives, relaying incorrect information via unofficial channels.
  • Fake Job Offers: SHOFCO does not charge fees for job applications or interviews. Official job postings are linked from our website. If it’s not there, it’s not SHOFCO!
  • Bogus Grant Opportunities: We do not require payment or sensitive personal information to apply for any of our programs or services.
  • Phishing Attempts: Be cautious of emails or messages claiming to be from SHOFCO that request personal or financial details.

How to Verify a SHOFCO Program or Request

If you are unsure about SHOFCO opportunities or messages that appear to be originating from SHOFCO, follow these steps:

  • Visit a SHOFCO/SUN office in your area to verify any claims.
  • Check our website for updates and official announcements.
  • Contact us directly via email at info@shofco.org or call our official phone number listed on our website. Verify ANY WhatsApp communication asking for sensitive information. Email and phone are SHOFCO’s official communications channels.
