Executive Director, Makini College
Joseph Okelo has extensive experience in education, business, and youth development.
He is the Executive Director of Makini College, Training and Consultancy. The College is a tertiary institution that offers the prestigious Chartered Institute of Marketing (C.I.M.) and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (C.I.P.R.) programs. He is also a Director of Makini School, a leading private school based in Kenya. The School was incorporated in 1978 and has won numerous awards for academic and co-curricular performance over the years.
Joseph is the East African Director of the Global Travel and Tourism Partnership (GTTP) program. The GTTP is a multi-country educational program that introduces students to career opportunities in travel and tourism. To date, more than two million students in 12 countries have participated in the program.
He has a keen passion for youth, education, technology, equality and social inclusion. He has been involved in many initiatives that support these causes.
He sits on the board of GESCI, an international non-profit technical assistance organization that was founded by a UN ICT Task Force. He is also the Chair of the Board of CBM Kenya, which is a part of CBM, the world’s largest Christian organization working with people with disabilities in the poorest places.
Joseph is the founder of Palos Community Center, an institution that creates learning opportunities for the underprivileged residents of the Nyangeta area of Kisumu County. To date, the center has trained over 3,000 community members on basic ICT and work readiness skills.
He founded a community football club, Palos Football Club, in 2012 as a district club for the youth of Nyalenda and Obunga slums. The club has successfully been promoted in 3 successive years and currently plays in the second highest league in Kenya, the National Super League.
He is also the Founder and Chairman of the Association of Family Business Enterprises and he is an Executive Committee Member of the Kenya Table Tennis Association, the body that runs table tennis in Kenya.
Joseph holds a Bachelor of Arts degree is Sociology from the University of Western Ontario, Canada and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Nottingham, U.K.
He is a member of many professional bodies including ASSTD, the world’s largest professional association dedicated to the training and development field, the Institute of Directors – Kenya, Toastmasters, Business Network International, Family Business Network International and the Chartered Management Institute.
